Parque de Monserrat, Sintra, Portugal

Gardeners of Sintra

Located in Portugal’s Grande Lisboa subregion and with its particular climatic regime, Sintra has inspired various 19th century aristocrats and wealthy tradesmen to establish dwellings surrounded by romantic gardens and spiritualist horticulture. Recently, the park administration has launched social rehabilitation programs to have the gardens maintained by mixed groups of gardeners including former prison inmates starting a new life within these contemplative landscapes. We went to spend some time with them and follow their work.
